Democracy was never supposed to be about mob rule, anymore than you would want a mob of football hooligans to referee the match. What next? Referenda on capital punishment, and enforced repatriation?  This is where Germany was 90 years ago, so they have sort of got their way – turning the clock back with the prospect of a new inward-looking dark age. I suppose that the bottle blonde cynic will take charge, continuing to put his Johnson into all sorts of unwanted places. Will the first lady get back from the station in time to take over Number 10? Everybody’s knickers will now be in a permanent twist.
